Steam: News

Hipster controllers

  • I was expecting more FK you pricing on the Nintendo controllers.
    • You have to be a paying monthly sub to even be allowed to buy them.
  • No Linux firmware update for the dualsense?

Proton

  • Bunch of video fixes.
    • Apparently VP8/9 support wasn’t so great up until now
  • Fixing deathloop crashing after a suspend is probably very useful for steam deck owners.
  • Improve steering wheel detection but don’t try that on Deck.

New Experiential

  • New DKV3D means you gotta be on the latest and greatest mesa/nvidia drivers for dx12
  • Atelier, One Piece Pirate Warriors and Karmaflow the rock opera episodes 1 and 2 are your newly playable games this release
  • COW support if you’re on something liike btrfs or an LVM snapshot
  • I guess having an event where people can try a bunch of games for free is a good way to find problems on your compatibility layer.
  • I see you VALVe.

Steam: New Games

Selaco

  • Vulkan, in the wrong monitor, but VUlkan.
  • Smooth at 1080p unless smoke.
  • Angered Strider so it has that endorsement.
  • New Gzdoom who dis
  • Looks very nice for a GZDoom game
  • I look forward to the final version.
  • Does a good job of pressing down the “oh shit” button.

Last Call BBS

  • This is some frog fractions 2 bullshit
  • A collection of minigames with “secrets”
  • Design factories to produce food just like they did over 700 years ago in the 20th century.
  • Does it have a narrator?
  • I don’t mind the collection of minigames
  • But the sheer amount of games with “clever” outwardly overt 4th wall breaking over the past 7 years seems excessive.
  • I blame Undertale.

Hand of Merlin

  • Croteam is back with the linux releases
  • Fantasy XCOM is up my alley
    • Some review made it out to be more like renowned explorers. I liked that game too
  • Looks to be a wee short according to the comments.
  • Like, 1’ish hours short.
  • And the roguelike replayability doesn’t seem to be there, either.
  • Hm…

Steam: Game Updates

BeamNVulkan

  • That list of known issues deterred me from going directly to the store and buying the game
  • Also, not every Linux user is a filthy dual booting heathen.
  • the game runs completely natively without any kind of software in the middle, which allows us to get higher performance and compatibility on Linux devices”
    • These guys get it.
  • Then again, that could be code for “runs a bit like poo on the Deck with Proton”.
  • 7 years in Early Access.

Jupiter Hell 1.4.0

  • CTRL+F Linux doesn’t find anything.
  • Since the previous big update focused on the Callisto portion of the campaign, this one focuses on Europa.
  • There’s a new mid boss in Europa
  • The caves/cliffs areas got a revamp.
  • Basically if you’re still into Jupiter Hell, this is worth the update.

Total War: WARHAMMER III

  • Yeah, that’s a hard sell in these Proton times.
  • Play the “native” version if you want to only play with Linux users.
  • Seriously feral, I love you guys for what you gave us during the lean years but you had those ten fucking years to figure out this mutliplayer problem.
  • Ass-pyre had working cross platform multiplayer for borderlands and civ from the get go. Yeah that didn’t last but that was due to version mismatch.
  • Don’t get us wrong, it’s good to see Feral putting out the Linux game
  • For they have the one that they release now.
  • But the multiplayer doesn’t fly when VALVe can do Linux to Windows multiplayer with a 3rd party translation layer running separate from the game and without any source code access.

On Rusty Decks

  • Not really an update but they made a post about how the Linux version still works just fine.
  • Native linux game works great on steam deck.
  • Fantastic little puzzle game from a fantastic little team.

News:

dhewm3 1.5.2

  • Pasting with shift-insert (aka middle click) works on linux now
  • Console logging in XDG_DATA_HOME
  • Libjpg, libogg and libvorbis have been moved to the standard libraries, hopefully removing some external dependencies
  • Miscellaneous wayland fixes
  • See you in hell strncpy(). No more buffer overflows for you!
  • I’ve been playing some of the single player and it does make with the working.

Heroic v2.4.0

  • There’s now an option to show you the path of your wine executable.
  • Pretty handy if you’re juggling multiple concurrent versions of wine for compatibility reasons.
  • Download indicators now persist on the sidebar if you go somewhere else in the UI
  • Still a big fan of them shouting out new contributors at the end of the release.
  • Auto-Complete to the Search Bar.
  • Remove CrossOver support on Linux.
  • That flatpak makes things real easy!
  • I don’t even have an Epic account but if you want a GOG client and you don’t like Lutris, Heroic is the shit.

Daggerfall Unity – GOG Cut

  • Of course they only sell the windows version.
  • Comes with a load of Mods.
  • I do wonder what the feasibility is of extracting all the files from this version and dropping the Linux binaries in.

Mine the cloud

  • This is neat.
  • COLAB offers what is basically google docs but for code editing.
  • But the answer to the question posed is: yes you can build a minecraft server in a jupyter notebook and run it. You can even have it bypass the 12 hour server limitation
  • Apparently it doesn’t technically violate the terms of service but don’t be surprised if google nopes this from orbit

20 Years of Neverwinter Nights

  • Yeah, how old do you feel right now?
  • If you managed to dodge the free giveaways they’ve done on GOG and Steam, wait for a sale and buy it all including all the new premium modules for around £20.
  • The engine and derivatives were used for KotOR1 and 2, Jade Empire, The Witcher, Sonic Chronicles, Dragon Age Origins, and Tron Evolution.
  • Still my all time favorite Linux native game.

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Debian 11, nvidia 3060, clean bill of health.
  • Windowed & fullscreen.
  • Proper button prompts for the xclone.
  • Pixel art is legit.
  • That. Fkn. Said.
  • What the hell is with this theatrical soundtrack?
  • Tee Lopes, Jonny Atma, Ghostface Killah and Mega Ran?
  • I say goddamn.
  • Everything from 90’s hair metal to legit hip hop, with a dash of beep-boop synth thrown in for good measure.
  • The only thing missing was the occasional BoomShakaLaka coming from the NBA Jam cabinet.
  • And to tops things off, the *.ogg are included with the game.

Fun?

  • Welcome to deep cuts, the game.
  • Right out of the box this had me hitting google to find out about the background characters.
  • A lot of them were from the TOS, I just didn’t remember.
  • Anyway, it’s fun.
  • This absolutely captures the arcade 4-player co-op mayhem from back in the day with some modern touches.
  • Unlike the arcade it was not designed from the bottom up to extract quarter/20p from your pocket.
  • Unless you want it to.
  • There are two modes, arcade and story.
  • Arcade is gonna arcade but the story mode unlocks childhood trauma by showing you an overworld map from TMNT on the NES.
  • On behalf of every 90’s kid, fuck that game.
  • Story mode has a levelling system to unlock new moves and the hockey player.
  • It even includes side missions and secrets to unlock.
  • Pacing is nice with each level taking 6-9 minutes to complete.
  • Good sense of humour as well.
  • Combat can be button mashy or combo skill based.
  • About two hours of playtime but the levelling system and unlockables are built for replayability.

Jordan:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches OOTB
  • Holds 60@ UHD
  • Proper button prompts for DS4
  • Oh yeah, there be character blindness in multiplayer
  • Killer soundtrack though

Fun?

  • I don’t think I could play this on single player
  • Fortunately, I have a bunch of people I can play this with, and as far as beat’em ups go it’s pretty fun
  • It’s old school to a fault, with plenty of cheap shots and gotchas that will catch you off guard if you haven’t been through there before
  • The characters are pretty much distinguished by their speed, damage and hurt box. I think that last one is really all that matters
  • There’s some replayability with needing to get all of the VHS tapes, flies, hentai and whatever else the various tertiary turtles supporting cast need you to collect
  • And man, there are more Turtles deep cuts then I know what to do with. Or that I even know of!
  • If you can get some buds together (and a good number of them too, six person MP is pretty uncommon)
  • I also wonder when someone just straight up builds an arcade cabinet for this

Pedro:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches out of the box
  • I can’t say that FNA VSync is a bag of lies anymore.
  • It actually does properly sync to the refresh rate of the monitor now.
  • Something tells me a certain Deck’s ability to change Hz on the fly might have made the case for that.
  • Both the graphics and sounds are legit mega-drive aesthetics, but the 700MB would be a hard sell for that system.
  • When you can get a fast 512GB SD for under £50, it’s less of a problem

Fun?

  • It’s hard to point at a specific thing that annoyed me with Shredder’s Revenge
  • Because all the bullshit hits from enemies without an arcing move that are a full character shadow vertically away from you and still hit, and the enemies that are too fast and keep landing bullshit shots or grabs, those are just par for the genre.
  • You should be going in expecting that bullshit and it is in fact there!
  • Heck, you even have Alex Kidd monkeys dealing damage from outside the map.
  • You may want to play this on the easiest difficulty if what I just described sounds exactly as annoying as it is.
  • I get that when bosses are winding up an attack they have infinite poise, but they seem to randomly also have brief moments on infinite poise when they’re doing the idle animation too.
  • But I’m nitpicking.
  • I actually had a lot of fun.
  • The dodging is not as effective as it is in other genre defining games, but you can use it to scooch just in time out of a bullshit attack, so it evens out.
  • I can’t give it a perfect score because I have to stop playing after 2 or 3 levels when it starts to make me angry.
